Richard Andrew Thorburn cunoscut sub numele de R.A. the Rugged Man s-a născut în data de 10 ianuarie 1974 în Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. În anul 1992, la doar 18 ani a semnat un contract cu Jive Records, iar la jumătatea anilor 90 a semnat cu Priority Records/EMI, contractul trecând ulterior la Capitol Records. A începus să înregistreze însă independent la începutul anilor 2000, lucrând cu artiști precum The Notorious B.I.G., Mobb Deep, Chuck D de la Public Enemy, Jedi Mind Tricks, Tech N9ne, Hopsin, Talib Kweli, Masta Ace, Kool G Rap, Wu-Tang Clan, Rakim și Killah Priest și producători precum Trackmasters, Erick Sermon, DJ Quik, Buckwild, Alchemist și Ayatollah. A apărut pe toate cele 3 compilații (Soundbombing) de la Rawkus și pe compilația WWF Aggression care a luat platina, fiind de asemenea interpretul imnului lui Chris Jericho.
Reușește să lanseze primul album oficial abia în 2004, prin Nature Sounds. Pe Die, Rugged Man, Die colaborează cu Masta Killa, Killah Priest și Timbo King, iar pe partea de producție cu Marc "Nigga" Nilez, Ayatollah, Koran the L.T.D., "You can ask" Giz, Cologero, Jocko, White Mandingos, Vapor World, DJ Luciano of The Beatills, Dev One și J-Zone.
La 9 ani distanță lansează cel de-al doilea album, Legends Never Die, tot prin Nature Sounds, în data de 30 aprilie 2013. Îi are ca invitați pe Talib Kweli, Krizz Kaliko, Masta Ace, Brother Ali, Tech N9ne, Hopsin, Vinnie Paz, Eamon și Sadat X, iar instrumentalele sunt produse de Apathy, Buckwild, C-Lance, Dev-1, Jussi Jaakola, Marc Niles, Mr. Green, Shuko, Vherbal și Will Tell.
Albumul debutează pe locul 1 în topul US Billboard Heatseekers Albums și pe locul 131 în Billboard 200, reușind să vândă 3500 unități în prima săptămână.
