Wale grabs an important career benchmark with "The Gifted," while J. Cole out-sells Kanye West, Lil Wayne grabs his latest gold plaque, and Dr. Dre reminds everybody that his sales are timeless.
For the first time in his career, Wale has a #1 solo album. The veteran DMV artist earned his title with The Gifted. The Atlantic Records-backed Maybach Music Group artist sold over 150,000 first-week units on his third album, grabbing the spot.
In week two, J. Cole's Born Sinner out-sold Kanye West's Yeezus by nearly 20,000 units. The Roc Nation artist is chasing up to his June 18 release date mate in overall sales. Meanwhile, Mac Miller fell from the Top 10 on his sophomore LP, Watching Movies With The Sound Off.
Doomtree member Dessa continues to grow her audience with her latest solo LP, Parts Of Speech. Meanwhile, Lil Wayne crossed the 500,000 gold-mark with this year's I Am Not A Human Being II. The Cash Money Records superstar continues to hit benchmark sales with his many, many releases.
Dr. Dre also popped up on the Top 200 with his 1999 sophomore solo, which marches on towards eight-times platinum status, domestically.
Wale Is Commercially Gifted
Wale's third LP, The Gifted, sold just a few thousand units less at first week than his 2011 effort, Ambition. However, this afforded the former Mark Ronson protege his first #1 album as a soloist.
The emcee's first effort since the Atlantic/Warner Bros. Records merger features appearances from Wiz Khalifa, Cee Lo, and former must-see-TV titan Jerry Seinfeld. Wale also enlisted production from Just Blaze, Juicy J and onetime Hitmen Sean C. & LV.
J. Cole Stays A Born Seller
J. Cole showed staying power on the charts, over-taking fellow Jay-Z protege Kanye West on June 18 album sales. Born Sinner is fast-approaching 400,00 units sold overall. The North Carolina native got a career milestone boost from one of his heroes since the LP dropped, when Nas hopped on the remix to "Let Nas Down."
