Drake's "Nothing Was The Same" remains at the top of Hip Hop's charts, DJ Khaled debuts "Suffering From Success" and TLC gets a boost in album sales.
This week, DJ Khaled entered the Billboard Top 200 album charts, while Drake held on to the top spot in Hip Hop.
The #1 album overall, Katy Perry's Prism, includes one rapper as a featured guest. The project features Juicy J on "Dark Horse." J is the only featured guest on the album.
Drake's Nothing Was The Same remains the top selling Hip Hop album of the week. DJ Khaled's Suffering From Success follows, being the only other Hip Hop album in the Top 10 this week.
TLC came into this week with a strong showing as well. The group debuted their new project, 20, to coincide with their new biopic, CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story. The film also rejuvenated a past album, which makes an appearance on this week's charts also.
Drake Nothing Was The Same Remains At The Top In Hip Hop Sales
Drake continues to reign as the top rapper on the charts, five weeks after the release of his most recent album, Nothing Was The Same. This week, Drake sold more than 44,000 units and moved up to #3 from last week's #4 slot. Drake recently thanked a musical partner for much of his success on this album. “My right-hand partner in music creation, challenged me on this album to trim that fat,” Drake said during an interview with CBC Radio. “To make a very concise project and asked me to—actually gave me a song cap. Asked me to keep it at 13 or 14 songs on the original. And so that was an interesting challenge for me. And now that it’s out and the world appreciates it, it’s a great feeling.” To date, Nothing Was The Same has sold more than 991,000 units.
DJ Khaled Suffering From Success Sails Into The Top 10
DJ Khaled's Suffering From Success landed at #7 in its opening week. Khaled sold more than 26,000 units of the collection in that week. As noted, it is only the second highest Hip Hop release of the week and the only other Rap project in the Top 10, behind Drake's Nothing Was The Same. Before the set was released, Khaled spoke about the inspiration behind the album's title. "I'm running around and I notice a big bald spot [on my beard]," Khaled said in a video interview he released. "I'm acting like I don't want to see it, I'm brushing it away and it kept getting it bigger and bigger. When I finally got home off the road, I was like, 'I'ma go to the doctors'…[the doctor] said [it's a disorder] that comes from your nerves and your stress, but [she] gave me some medication...Through that whole process while I'm at the doctor's, my phone's ringing, I'm dealing with marketing people, I'm dealing with lawyers…she found out who I was, and after watching that 45 minute doctor's session, she grabbed my shoulder and she just goes, 'Son, you're suffering from success.' I looked at her and was like, 'That might be the realest thing you can tell me.'"
TLC Releases 20, Revives CrazySexyCool's Sales
TLC commanded attention from some old and new fans due to the Vh1 biopic CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story. 20 was released to coincide with the recent airing of the group's film. Much like the Vh1 biopic, this project is a look back at the group's progression over the years. "This album is like going down memory lane, from the beginning of our career to present day," T-Boz said of the project on "Good Morning America." "It ends with a new song that Ne-Yo wrote called 'Meant to Be,' because we always said it was an 'MTB thing.' It was meant to be. It's like a song that wraps up our 20-year history together in one song." This likely helped TLC land at #12 selling more than 20,000 units of 20 in its second week. The #12 ranking is a jump from last week's showing at #72. This wasn't the only TLC album that made waves on the charts this week. CrazySexyCool reappeared on the charts, selling more than 3,000 copies for the week. CrazySexyCool has sold more than 7,495,000 units to date.
