Post boom small town Ireland may not appear the most creatively inspiring place at face value, but for Irish hip hop artist Darce it provided a fruitful if unlikely origin for a new musical perspective on love, life and other bad habits.
Influenced by his American family and culture, Darce began rapping at the age of 11, combining transatlantic and local influences to develop a voice and lyrical approach through which he attempts to make sense of the world around him and the search for his place in it.
Darce's debut single Snapbacks+Flashbacks is typical of this style; a self effacing and admirably honest anecdote about an alcohol fueled summer's evening and a love that could have been, while also using subtext to highlight our obsession with using material things to define ourselves. The tracks blend of live instrumentation, pitch shifted vocals and synths mirror the clash of cultures that influence its creator.
