That Mexican OT - Recess (2025)

Albumul "Recess" a fost lansat de That Mexican OT în data de 15 august 2025, prin Good Life și Capitol.

Great flows and really funny, entertaining skits but the album ends up being way to inconsistent, containing way to many ‘fucking yo mamma’ lines making the album straight out mid.

At his best OT is a great rapper, I really like the way he raps and flows on the beat with the speed that he can rap at times along with his unique vocal style with all the R’s he rolls on his tracks. I, like many people, got into OT through that amazing track “Black Flag Freestyle” with Denzel Curry, who also happens to be on this album as a feature. The only other project I have heard from OT is ‘TEXAS TECHNICIAN’ which, similar to this album, was way too inconsistent and made for another ‘mid album’ experience. I had also tried to listen to his other 2025 album ‘Chicken & Sauce’ with Sauce Walks, but I generally couldn't finish it cause I wasn't enjoying it at all. Months later OT is back with his solo album ‘Recess’ and while it's an album with cool ideas, skits and the occasional track where he goes absolutely off. It's unfortunately too filled with tracks with over explicit lyrics, jokes that are said one too many times and some weird tracks where OT is singing?

There are a few really great tracks on here, the intro “Hate Being Famous” was so good it gave me a false sense of security that the whole album was gonna be somewhat good. I really like the approach OT took on this track, it felt more introspective and serious compared to a lot of what is on this album. The album feels 10% serious and level headed while 80% is fun, silly and slightly outrageous lyrically and the other 10% is him singing. I also really like what he was talking about on this track. Speaking about the effects of fame, on privacy and how people see you as a human. I thought it was really nice to hear OT in his more introspective bag, and I really think it's something he needs to tap more into. Maybe not a whole album, but we definitely need more than just 1 or 2 tracks that are somewhat thought provoking.

Another great track, “Blocka Blocka” with Denzel Curry, is no surprise being the best track on the album. But it's not just because of Denzel, OT is also great on this track. I really like the hook on this track, super catchy and playful and OT and Denzel’s verses are some of the best writing on the album. Some other good tracks to give credit to are ‘Beat Box’ feat Lil Jairmy & OTB Fastlane, ‘Chronic’ feat Bravo the Bagchaser and ‘Accessories’ feat Peso Peso which are some of the good tracks amongst along of straight ass and the ‘whatever’ track on the album.

The skits on here play a huge part to the album. And honestly, they are one of the best parts of the album. They are super fun, occasionally they are actually pretty funny and they tell this sorta story where OT was a freaky menace in school.
All in all, unfortunately the album suffers as much bad as it gives good. Too many bad tracks on here, one too many tracks where OT decides to give us a ballad. Feeling a 5/10 for this album. Hopefully his next LP has a more serious tone to it. https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/kodakez/album/1423601-recess/

That Mexican OT is back with a new solo offering in the massive "Recess" which features guests and sonic fusions galore.

That Mexican OT has come a long way already from his 2023 breakout smash "Johnny Dang." But what has stayed true since that moment is the Bay City, Texas native's charm. His newest album, Recess, has a lot of that in addition to his comedic wit.

The 22-song LP has some hilarious skits with a school theme. He's causing a raucous at his new place of learning by stealing cough syrup and getting down to some mischievous behavior. That humor carries over into some the tracks, especially on the confident but explicit "Rap Sons."

"Oh, I got a whole lot of b*tches sayin' they pregnant with my kid / I got to tell 'em every time, "That whack a*s rapper ain't my son."

The project is also a blast laughs aside, though. For first-time listeners of That Mexican OT some of the sonic lefts may be surprising. But the decisions to sing over a twangy country instrumental or to show his proficiency over a boom bap beat aren't new.

Overall, it's a diverse and extremely entertaining project that keeps you on your toes in the best way possible.https://www.hotnewhiphop.com/937967-that-mexican-ot-recess-stream
